MSNBC and CNN Ratings Drop Sharply as Fox News Leads
Cable news ratings have taken a sharp turn, with MSNBC and CNN experiencing major declines in viewership while Fox News continues to outperform both networks by a wide margin, according to the latest data from Nielsen as reported by the New York Post. The recent numbers highlight growing viewer dissatisfaction with left-leaning coverage and a continued shift toward outlets perceived as more aligned with conservative perspectives.
CNN’s primetime lineup has reportedly lost over 20% of its audience compared to the same period last year, with several evening programs struggling to hold consistent ratings. MSNBC has also seen a double-digit percentage drop, particularly in key demographic brackets such as adults aged 25 to 54. This age group is highly valued by advertisers and networks alike, making the decline even more impactful.
Meanwhile, Fox News has retained its top spot in cable news, maintaining a strong lead in both total viewers and the advertiser-coveted demographic. Programs like “The Five,” “Jesse Watters Primetime,” and “Hannity” continue to outperform competitors, with several consistently ranking in the top five across all cable news broadcasts.
One of the major contributing factors to the shift appears to be content tone and political orientation. CNN and MSNBC have leaned heavily into progressive commentary and coverage that appeals to center-left audiences. However, post-2020, viewership spikes seen during the Trump administration have not held. Since then, audiences appear to be disengaging, possibly fatigued by relentless partisan framing or seeking alternatives with broader appeal.
Fox News, despite facing internal challenges in recent years, has managed to hold its audience by focusing on populist messaging, crime stories, and cultural issues that resonate with a wide swath of conservative and independent viewers. Its consistency has helped the network avoid the ratings freefall affecting its competitors.
CNN has recently undergone leadership changes and attempted a pivot toward more centrist coverage, though results have so far been underwhelming. The network’s new morning and evening show formats have not drawn the numbers executives had hoped for. Critics argue the network has struggled to define a clear editorial identity since the departure of former president Jeff Zucker.
MSNBC, which has largely doubled down on progressive viewpoints, remains competitive during certain hours, particularly with hosts like Rachel Maddow. However, its broader programming has struggled to attract new audiences outside its core base. This has led some media analysts to question the long-term sustainability of hyper-partisan news models.
Nielsen’s data reinforces the trend that viewers are becoming more selective, and possibly fatigued, with ideological slant in news delivery. While Fox News benefits from a loyal base, the broader implication may be a growing fragmentation of the cable news audience.
With streaming platforms and independent digital outlets gaining popularity, traditional cable networks face increasing pressure to evolve. Still, Fox’s sustained dominance suggests that clarity of message and consistency in tone remain key to holding viewership in a crowded media landscape.
Executives at CNN and MSNBC have reportedly acknowledged the downward trend and are assessing future strategy options. Whether these changes can reverse the course remains uncertain, especially as Americans seek news sources they perceive as more trustworthy or aligned with their views.
