Grand Theft Auto VI Release Delayed to May 2026

The highly anticipated video game Grand Theft Auto VI will not hit shelves until May 26, 2026, a delay that has disappointed fans but reflects the developer’s commitment to quality. Rockstar Games, the studio behind the blockbuster franchise, announced the postponement from its original fall 2025 target, citing the need for additional polish to meet player expectations.
Grand Theft Auto VI, the eighth main installment in the iconic series, follows the massive success of Grand Theft Auto V, which has sold over 210 million copies since its 2013 debut. The new game promises a sprawling open-world experience set in the fictional state of Leonida, inspired by Florida, with Vice City as its neon-lit centerpiece.
Rockstar’s decision comes after years of speculation and a major leak in September 2022, when unfinished gameplay footage surfaced online, shocking the gaming industry. The studio formally revealed the game in December 2023, releasing a trailer that amassed over 100 million views and fueled excitement for a 2025 launch.
The delay stems from Rockstar’s insistence on delivering a polished product, a priority underscored by its apology to fans. “We hope you understand that we need this extra time to deliver at the level of quality you expect and deserve,” the company stated, acknowledging the “humbling” enthusiasm surrounding the title.
Set to feature Lucia, the series’ first female protagonist, and her male partner in a Bonnie and Clyde-inspired narrative, Grand Theft Auto VI aims to push storytelling boundaries. The game’s satirical take on modern American culture, including social media and internet memes, is expected to resonate with its global fanbase.
The postponement has ripple effects across the gaming industry, as other publishers now have clearer windows to schedule their releases without competing against Rockstar’s juggernaut. Titles like Borderlands 4 and Ghost of Yotei may benefit from the absence of Grand Theft Auto VI in late 2025.
Rockstar’s parent company, Take-Two Interactive, supported the delay, with CEO Strauss Zelnick emphasizing the studio’s “commitment to excellence.” However, the news led to an 8% drop in Take-Two’s stock price in premarket trading, reflecting investor concerns about the financial impact.
The game will launch on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S, but a PC version remains unconfirmed, potentially leaving PC gamers waiting longer. Fans, while frustrated, are hopeful the extra time ensures a groundbreaking experience when Grand Theft Auto VI finally arrives in May 2026.
