Jimmy Kimmel Faces Backlash Over Charlie Kirk Comments

ABC late-night host Jimmy Kimmel is under intense scrutiny following controversial remarks about the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk. During a recent monologue, Kimmel suggested the alleged shooter, Tyler Robinson, was aligned with the “MAGA gang,” prompting widespread outrage and calls for his firing or a full retraction.

Kirk, the founder of Turning Point USA, was fatally shot on September 10, 2025, at Utah Valley University by 22-year-old Robinson, who faces charges of aggravated murder. Authorities, including Utah Governor Spencer Cox and FBI officials, have stated Robinson held leftist ideologies, contradicting Kimmel’s claims.

In his Monday episode, Kimmel reportedly said, “We hit some new lows over the weekend with the MAGA gang desperately trying to characterize this kid who murdered Charlie Kirk as anything other than one of them.” These remarks clashed with law enforcement findings, including text messages where Robinson expressed hatred for Kirk’s rhetoric.

Prosecutors revealed Robinson texted his roommate, saying, “I had enough of his hatred. Some hate can’t be negotiated out.” This evidence points to ideological motives rooted in opposition to Kirk’s conservative views, not alignment with them.

Social media erupted with demands for ABC to act. One X post with over 200,000 views called for Kimmel’s career to end, accusing him of spreading lies about Robinson’s political leanings.

Critics argue Kimmel’s comments fuel division in an already polarized climate. They point to his mockery of former President Donald Trump’s response to Kirk’s death as further evidence of bias.

Kimmel also contrasted his own statement condemning gun violence with Trump’s, which he described as childish. Neither Kimmel nor ABC has responded to the backlash as of now.

The controversy follows other media missteps, including retracted reports about bullet casings with transgender and anti-fascist inscriptions. These errors have intensified public distrust in mainstream reporting.

Kirk’s death has sparked broader debates about political rhetoric and violence. Some conservatives demand harsher penalties, while others, like Robinson’s family, express shock at his actions.

Robinson, from a Republican family, reportedly became radicalized recently. His grandmother told media he was shy and apolitical, making his motives even more perplexing.

Utah County Attorney Jeff Gray is seeking the death penalty for Robinson. The case continues to unfold, with a hearing reportedly scheduled for September 29.

The calls to fire Kimmel or revoke ABC’s license reflect growing frustration with perceived media bias. Whether Kimmel will retract his statements remains unclear, but the pressure is mounting.
