Minnesota Man Claims Deadly Sh-oting of State Lawmaker Was Ordered by Governor in Letter
Full Story
Vance Boelter, accused of fatally sh–ting Minnesota state lawmaker Melissa Hortman and her husband, reportedly confessed in a handwritten letter found in his car. The letter claimed Boelter had been acting under secret orders from the state’s governor, a claim authorities are not treating as credible.
Investigators found the letter inside Boelter’s alleged getaway car and addressed to the director of the FBI. In it, Boelter claimed he was instructed to target political figures as part of a covert directive.

The Context
Boelter asserted he had served in undisclosed military roles and was supposedly recruited to carry out “patriotic” missions. He specifically alleged the governor had asked him to kill certain Democratic senators.
Authorities say the letter included lists of individuals, primarily left-leaning public officials and judges, which they believe may have been potential targets. They also found notebooks outlining travel routes and aliases Boelter allegedly used.
Prosecutors have cast serious doubt on the letter’s credibility, suggesting it may be the product of delusion or a calculated legal strategy. There is no evidence linking any government official to Boelter’s actions.
Boelter allegedly posed as a law enforcement officer using a fake police uniform and unmarked car. This ruse reportedly allowed him to approach and sh–t the victims at close range.
Federal charges filed against Boelter include murder, stalking, impersonating a federal officer, and multiple firearms offenses. The case is being prosecuted in both state and federal court, with the death penalty being considered.
While the letter contains extreme claims, officials state there’s no indication anyone else was involved or that Boelter was following real orders. His mental state is likely to become a central focus of the defense and trial proceedings.
