Ramaswamy Pushes for Presidential Fitness Test
Vivek Ramaswamy, a 39-year-old biotech entrepreneur and former 2024 presidential candidate, announced his candidacy for Ohio governor on February 24, 2025, in Cincinnati. As part of his campaign, he has proposed reinstating the Presidential Fitness Test for Ohio schoolchildren. The test, which ran from the 1950s to 2013, included a timed mile run, pull-ups, sit-ups, a shuttle run, and flexibility tests.
Ramaswamy first mentioned this idea on X on February 13, 2025, at 13:57 PST, stating: “Bring back the presidential fitness test in schools. Serve healthier food in the cafeteria & start physical education in kindergarten. The best way to save on health costs in the long run is to create a healthier population in the first place.”
He repeated variations of this on X multiple times, adding middle school as the target and emphasizing healthier cafeteria food.
Ramaswamy ties the proposal to addressing obesity, which exceeds 40% nationwide according to CDC data, and reducing long-term healthcare costs. He has not proposed a mandatory fitness test for presidential candidates. During his 2024 presidential campaign, which ended before the primaries, he focused on youth and energy but made no mention of candidate fitness tests. His current campaign for Ohio governor, set for 2026, builds on education reforms, including this fitness initiative, alongside banning cell phones in classrooms and merit-based teacher pay.
Historical figures like John F. Kennedy supported the original Presidential Fitness Test for students in the 1960s, urging physical fitness to counter a perceived decline in American youth. The program was discontinued in 2013 under President Barack Obama, replaced by the Presidential Youth Fitness Program focused on personal goals.
Obesity rates in the U.S. remain above 40%, per the CDC. A Gallup poll from 2023 found 67% of Americans want more health disclosure from political candidates, though this is unrelated to Ramaswamy’s school-focused plan. A Pew survey shows 71% of voters distrust Washington, a sentiment he has tapped into broadly but not specifically linked to this policy.
President Donald Trump endorsed Ramaswamy’s gubernatorial bid on February 24, 2025, via Truth Social, calling him “young, strong, and smart” with his “complete and total endorsement.” Ramaswamy has not detailed pass-fail criteria for the test or addressed implementation beyond stating it’s a state responsibility.
Ohio’s current governor, Mike DeWine, is term-limited and cannot run again in 2026. Ramaswamy grew up near Cincinnati, lives near Columbus, and has no prior elected office experience.
