Syrian Troops Allegedly Cross Border and Clash with Hezbollah
Fighting broke out overnight as soldiers from Syria’s new army reportedly crossed into Lebanon and engaged Hezbollah and Lebanese Army forces along the volatile border. This escalation follows the collapse of Bashar Assad’s regime in December 2024 and marks a bold move by the transitional Syrian government to assert control over its frontiers. Tensions in the region have soared as the power vacuum in Damascus fuels chaos and threatens to destabilize Lebanon further.
Clashes erupted near the town of Hermel in Lebanon’s Bekaa Valley where Syrian troops allegedly shelled Hezbollah positions. Local reports indicate the Syrian Army aimed to disrupt smuggling routes long controlled by the Iran-backed militia. Hezbollah has denied involvement in the skirmishes and claims its focus remains on rebuilding after losses against Israel.
The Lebanese Army rushed reinforcements to the border to counter the Syrian incursion and restore order. Military officials stated three Lebanese smugglers were killed in the fighting and one child died amid the crossfire. President Joseph Aoun ordered troops to retaliate against any gunfire originating from Syrian territory.
Syria’s new Islamist-led government under Ahmed al-Sharaa has prioritized cracking down on Hezbollah’s cross-border operations since taking power. The Syrian Defense Ministry deployed tanks and shelled what it called terrorist hideouts near Al-Qusayr. This strategic town has historically been a Hezbollah stronghold vital for its supply lines from Iran.
The violence has displaced families near the border with footage showing panicked residents fleeing toward Hermel. Lebanese authorities report at least six civilians wounded in the ongoing clashes. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights noted five Syrian soldiers died in the latest round of fighting.
Hezbollah’s weakened state after its war with Israel has emboldened Syria’s new rulers to challenge the group’s influence. Analysts suggest the militia’s retreat from Syrian territory after Assad’s fall left a void now contested by rival factions. Lebanon fears this conflict could draw it deeper into Syria’s turmoil and reignite sectarian tensions.
Lebanese and Syrian military leaders opened talks to de-escalate the situation and prevent further incursions. The Lebanese Army returned the bodies of three slain Syrian soldiers as a goodwill gesture. However sporadic gunfire continued into Monday morning and underscored the fragility of the border region.
This flare-up raises questions about Lebanon’s sovereignty as foreign forces exploit its porous borders. Critics argue the Lebanese Army lacks the strength to repel such threats without international support. The situation remains fluid with the potential to reshape alliances and power dynamics across the Middle East.
