Russia Claims Near-Complete Control of Kursk

Russia’s top general, Valery Gerasimov, announced that Russian forces have reclaimed 99.5% of the Kursk region, roughly 1,260 square kilometers, from Ukrainian control. Ukrainian troops now hold just 3 square kilometers around the border villages of Oleshnya and Gornal. Russia also claims to have retaken Oleshnya while advancing into Ukraine’s Sumy region.
Gerasimov stated that Ukrainian forces briefly occupied parts of Kursk in western Russia. The region lies near the border with Ukraine, a hotspot in the ongoing conflict.

The Context
