Vance Slams Germany Over U.S. Defense Costs
Vice President JD Vance dropped a bombshell Wednesday claiming Germany’s whole defense rests on American taxpayers. Speaking on Fox News he pointed to the 35000 U.S. troops stationed there today. He argued it is unfair for Americans to bankroll a rich nation like Germany. This comes as Trump’s team pushes NATO allies to pay up or face cuts in U.S. support. Vance’s blunt words signal a hard line from the White House. They also echo growing frustration over Europe’s reliance on Uncle Sam’s military might.
Vance did not hold back on the numbers. He said U.S. taxpayers shell out billions yearly to keep troops in Germany. The real cost is tough to pin down but Pentagon data shows 5 billion went to European bases in 2023. Germany chips in hosting funds yet Vance says it is not enough. He asked why Americans should foot the bill while Germany spends just 1.5 percent of its GDP on defense. That is well below NATO’s 2 percent goal. Trump has raged at this gap for years and Vance is now amplifying the gripe.
The timing is no fluke. NATO talks loom next month and Trump wants leverage. Vance’s jab at Germany fits a broader White House play to shake up the alliance. Trump has threatened to pull troops if allies do not boost spending. Germany’s role as Europe’s economic powerhouse makes it a prime target. Chancellor Olaf Scholz hit back Thursday saying Germany hosts U.S. forces for mutual gain. He noted 12000 German jobs tie to those bases. Still Vance’s words sting in Berlin.
This is personal for Vance too. He has ties to Ohio where German firms employ thousands. Yet he framed it as a fairness issue. Why should American families pay for Germany’s shield he asked. He even tied it to free speech saying Germans jail folks for mean tweets. That is a stretch but it plays to Trump’s base. Germany does have strict hate speech laws unlike the U.S. Vance wants NATO allies to stand on their own not lean on America’s military muscle.
Germany is not alone in the crosshairs. Trump has blasted Canada and others for low defense budgets. But Germany’s 35 million dollar economy makes it a poster child for Vance’s point. Berlin has hiked spending since Russia’s Ukraine war began. It plans to hit 2 percent by 2028. That is too slow for the White House. Vance says the U.S. can not wait while Europe dithers. He hinted at rethinking troop levels if Germany does not step up soon.
The blowback is already here. German officials called Vance’s take shortsighted. They argue U.S. troops in Europe check Russia and China too. NATO chief Jens Stoltenberg backed that line Wednesday saying the alliance benefits all. Critics say Vance ignores how U.S. bases abroad serve American interests. Still the VP stood firm. He told Fox the free ride ends now. Trump’s team wants cash or commitment from allies no excuses accepted.
This could shift global power. If Trump pulls troops from Germany it might force Europe to arm up fast. That suits Vance’s view of self-reliance. But it risks a weaker NATO as Putin watches. Allies like Poland and the UK back more U.S. presence not less. Vance’s stance could also hit trade ties. Germany exports 130 billion in goods to the U.S. yearly. Tariffs might follow if this feud grows. For now it is a warning shot from the VP.
Vance’s words light a fire under NATO. He and Trump want results not promises. Germany has a choice spend more or see U.S. forces thin out. The clock is ticking with Trump’s term underway. Vance made it clear America First means no more blank checks. Whether Germany bends or stands tall could set the tone for NATO’s future. Allies are on notice and the White House is not bluffing this time around.
