Authorities in Louisiana and Texas have apprehended three more inmates who escaped from a New Orleans jail, leaving just two fugitives still on the run after a bold breakout. The escape, which occurred on May 16, 2025, involved ten inmates fleeing the Orleans Parish Justice Center. This incident has raised concerns about jail security and prompted a multi-state manhunt.
The escapees reportedly broke out by exploiting a faulty cell door. They then squeezed through a hole behind a toilet to exit the facility.

The Context
The group scaled a barbed-wire fence using blankets for protection. They fled across Interstate 10, disappearing into a nearby neighborhood.
Authorities discovered the escape during a routine headcount at 8:30 a.m. on May 16. The delay in detection allowed the inmates several hours to evade capture.
The three recently captured inmates were arrested in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and Walker County, Texas. Their identities were confirmed as Lenton Vanburen, Leo Tate, and Jermaine Donald.
Five other escapees, including Dkenan Dennis and Corey Boyd, were previously recaptured. The manhunt continues for the remaining two inmates, whose identities were not specified in the latest update.
The escape has led to the arrest of six individuals accused of aiding the inmates. A jail maintenance worker was also arrested for allegedly assisting by turning off water to the toilet used in the escape.
Some support stronger jail oversight, arguing it prevents such breaches and ensures public safety. Others believe budget constraints and staffing shortages make perfect security challenging.
