Scottish Tourist Dies in Rome After Gas Blast Horror
A Scottish tourist has reportedly died in an Italian hospital following a devastating gas explosion that destroyed his holiday rental in Rome. Grant Paterson 54 endured severe burns over 75 percent of his body after the incident in the Monteverde district. Authorities are now probing the cause of the blast that shattered a peaceful vacation for the East Kilbride native.
The explosion ripped through the three-story building on March 23 leveling the structure and leaving Paterson trapped under debris. Emergency crews worked tirelessly to free him from the rubble where he was found conscious but gravely injured. He was rushed to Saint Eugenio Hospital in critical condition battling for survival.
Paterson had arrived in Rome days earlier eager to explore the historic city as a solo traveler. Social media posts revealed his excitement about the beautiful accommodation and visits to landmarks like the Colosseum. Tragically the explosion struck on what was meant to be his final day in the Italian capital.
Doctors at Saint Eugenio performed multiple surgeries to treat the extensive burns covering most of Paterson’s body. Despite their efforts and mechanical breathing support his condition deteriorated over the following week. His death was confirmed on April 1 leaving family and friends in mourning back in Scotland.
Rome Mayor Roberto Gualtieri visited the site shortly after the blast and ordered a full investigation into the incident. He expressed deep sorrow over Paterson’s death noting it saddened the entire city. Gualtieri emphasized the need to determine whether a gas leak triggered the explosion that caused such destruction.
Paterson worked for CalMac a Scottish ferry operator where colleagues remembered him as a true gentleman. Diane Burke the company’s chief operating officer said his loss left the team distraught. His 12-year career was marked by a larger-than-life character that endeared him to passengers and crew alike.
The investigation is now focusing on the safety standards of the rental property known as Mamma Roma. Authorities suspect a gas leak may have originated in the centuries-old building which housed six flats. Italy’s tourism minister stressed that tourist safety remains a top priority amid this tragedy.
Friends of Paterson launched a fundraiser to support his family raising over 12000 pounds in his memory. Tributes poured in highlighting his warm personality and the shock of his sudden death. The incident has sparked calls for stricter safety checks on holiday rentals across Italy to prevent future disasters.
