President Trump pardons Nikola founder Trevor Milton following fraud conviction
President Donald Trump has granted a full pardon to Trevor Milton the founder and former CEO of Nikola Corporation who was previously convicted of securities and wire fraud.
Milton was sentenced to four years in prison for misleading investors about the development of products and technology by Nikola including false claims about the company’s electric trucks and hydrogen fuel production capabilities.
The conviction followed a one-month trial where prosecutors demonstrated that Milton engaged in a scheme to defraud and mislead investors through various media appearances and social media platforms.
In a video posted to social media Milton stated that he received a call from President Trump who expressed that the prosecution was an injustice carried out by the same offices that had harassed and prosecuted him.
Critics argue that the pardon undermines efforts to hold corporate executives accountable for fraudulent behavior and could set a concerning precedent.
Supporters of Milton contend that the charges were politically motivated and that the pardon rectifies a miscarriage of justice.
This pardon adds to the list of controversial clemencies granted by President Trump during his tenure including those for individuals in the technology and transportation sectors.
The decision has sparked debate about the use of presidential pardon powers and the implications for corporate governance and investor protection.
