Man Attacks Priest at Spokane Church

Video footage has emerged showing a 40-year-old man assaulting a priest during a church service in Spokane Washington. The incident which occurred at the Cathedral of Our Lady of Lourdes was captured by security cameras and reported by ABC.

The assailant identified as Joshua James Sommers allegedly approached the altar and attempted to strike Father David Gaines with his fist. Quick action by parishioners and security personnel subdued Sommers until the police arrived.

This attack took place on Tuesday evening in front of approximately 400 attendees who were gathered for a novena prayer. The video clearly shows Sommers rushing from his pew to attack the priest during the service’s conclusion.

Father Gaines managed to avoid the full impact of the assault but was momentarily pinned by Sommers. The priest later expressed his relief at being unharmed physically though he noted the emotional toll on the congregation.

Sommers who has a history of assault was arrested on charges related to this incident as well as an outstanding warrant from a previous assault. He appeared in court the following day facing multiple charges including fourth-degree assault.
