Katy Perry Joins All-Female Crew for Historic Blue Origin Space Mission
On April 14, six women—including pop star Katy Perry and journalist Gayle King—will launch into space aboard Blue Origin’s New Shepard rocket, marking a historic all-female mission.
This flight represents the first all-female space crew since Soviet cosmonaut Valentina Tereshkova’s solo trip in 1963. The team aims to inspire a new generation of explorers with their journey.
The crew boasts an impressive lineup of talent and experience. Alongside Perry and King are former NASA scientist Aisha Bowe, activist Amanda Nguyen, filmmaker Kerianne Flynn, and pilot Lauren Sánchez, engaged to Blue Origin founder Jeff Bezos.
These women have undergone rigorous training for the 11-minute suborbital flight. Their preparation includes fighter jet rides, zero-gravity simulations, and sessions in a mock space capsule.
Perry has expressed excitement about adding a touch of flair to the mission. She jokingly remarked that she plans to make space “glam” while still focusing on the experience’s deeper meaning.
Each crew member can bring up to three pounds of personal items into space. Nguyen chose seashells from a refugee camp tied to her family’s past, symbolizing resilience and hope.
Perry, meanwhile, intends to bring a living item to stay connected to Earth. She has kept the specifics under wraps, sparking curiosity among fans and media alike.
The New Shepard rocket will carry them past the Kármán line, 62 miles above Earth. Though they won’t orbit, they’ll experience weightlessness and stunning views of the planet below.
Sánchez, who organized the crew, sees this as a chance to redefine exploration. She handpicked these women for their ability to share powerful stories upon their return.
Training has been intense, with the group bonding over their shared goal. They’ve already met in person, building camaraderie ahead of the high-stakes launch.
The mission aligns with Blue Origin’s push to expand space tourism. It’s the company’s 11th crewed flight, showcasing its growing role in the private space race.
Bezos himself flew on the first New Shepard mission in 2021. Now, his fiancée leads a crew that could reshape how the public views women in space.
