Instagram Tightens Rules for Teens Under 16

Instagram has rolled out strict new rules barring users under 16 from livestreaming or unblurring nude images in direct messages without parental consent, a move aimed at bolstering safety for young users on the popular platform.

The changes, effective immediately, require teens to verify parental approval via a linked account. This follows years of pressure from lawmakers and child safety advocates.

The platform already restricts adult interactions with teen accounts. Now, these added limits aim to curb exposure to explicit content and potential exploitation.

Parents must opt in through Instagram’s Family Center to unlock these features. Without approval, teens face a default “teen account” with heightened privacy settings.

Critics of social media argue the measures don’t go far enough to protect kids. They point to loopholes like fake parental accounts as persistent risks.

Instagram says the updates stem from consultations with experts and regulators. The goal is to balance teen autonomy with safeguards against online harm.

Livestreaming, a popular feature among young creators, is now off-limits for this age group. The restriction has sparked backlash from some teen influencers.

Data shows a rise in reported grooming incidents on social platforms in recent years. This has fueled urgency for tighter controls like Instagram’s latest move.

The company is also testing AI tools to detect age misrepresentation. Early trials suggest it could catch users lying about their birth dates to bypass rules.

Advocates praise the step but urge broader industry action on child safety. They’re calling for federal laws to enforce consistent standards across all platforms.

Some teens worry the changes stifle their creative freedom online. Others welcome the added layer of protection in an often-unregulated digital space.

Instagram plans to refine these policies based on user feedback and data. Executives stress their commitment to evolving safeguards as technology and risks shift.
