Anna Paulina Luna Quits Freedom Caucus Over Proxy Vote Clash

Representative Anna Paulina Luna has resigned from the House Freedom Caucus after a fierce dispute over her push to allow new parents in Congress to vote by proxy. The Florida Republican’s exit stems from the caucus’s efforts to block her proposal which aimed to help lawmakers balance family and duty. Her departure marks a rare fracture in the conservative group known for its hardline stances and loyalty to President Trump’s agenda.

Luna’s proposal sought to let new mothers and fathers cast votes remotely for up to 12 weeks after a child’s birth. She argued it would support lawmakers especially women who face tough choices between parenting and serving their constituents. The Freedom Caucus however saw it as a step toward weakening in-person voting a principle they’ve long defended against past Democratic policies.

The conflict boiled over when Luna launched a discharge petition to force a House vote bypassing leadership objections. She secured 218 signatures including some from fellow Republicans showing bipartisan backing for the family-friendly idea. Yet caucus members reportedly threatened to grind House proceedings to a halt unless Speaker Mike Johnson killed the measure outright.

In her resignation letter Luna blasted the caucus for what she called backroom deals and misrepresentation of her stance. She wrote that she could no longer stay in a group that undermined its own values to smear her efforts. The move has left the Freedom Caucus down to about 30 members its smallest size in years amid growing internal rifts.

Johnson a vocal foe of proxy voting from the COVID era labeled Luna’s plan unconstitutional despite using it himself in 2022. He’s rallied most Republicans against it arguing it could open the door to abuse or remote legislating by AI. Luna fired back on social media pointing out his past votes and calling his stance hypocritical for a pro-family party leader.

The proposal’s roots trace to Luna’s own experience giving birth in 2023 while serving her first term. She faced health issues like pre-eclampsia that barred her from traveling leaving her unable to vote on key issues like Kevin McCarthy’s ouster. Her fight now echoes a broader push to modernize Congress for younger parents a cause gaining traction across party lines.

Critics within the caucus say Luna’s exit weakens their leverage in Trump’s slim-majority House. They fear her petition could pass with Democratic support handing a win to liberals on a procedural issue. Supporters however praise her for standing up to what they call an outdated boys’ club mentality in GOP ranks.

The fallout leaves Johnson in a tight spot with Luna hinting his handling of this could sway her vote in the next speaker race. With only a two-seat GOP edge every defection stings and this saga exposes cracks in party unity. For now Luna vows to keep pushing her plan signaling more battles ahead over how Congress adapts to real-life demands.
