All-Female Crew Soars to Space on Blue Origin Flight

Six women, including journalist Gayle King and singer Katy Perry, made history with a 10-minute Blue Origin spaceflight, marking the first all-female crew in space since 1963. The flight, operated by Jeff Bezos’ private aerospace company, reached the edge of space on Monday. It highlights the growing role of commercial space travel in breaking barriers.

Blue Origin’s New Shepard rocket carried the crew to an altitude of about 62 miles, known as the Kármán line. The suborbital trip offered a brief experience of weightlessness and views of Earth’s curvature.

Gayle King, a prominent CBS anchor, and Katy Perry, a global pop star, were joined by four other women on the mission. Their participation underscores the increasing diversity in private space ventures.

The 1963 flight of Valentina Tereshkova, the first woman in space, was a Soviet milestone during the Cold War. Since then, dozens of women have flown, but all-female crews remain rare.

Blue Origin, founded by Bezos in 2000, competes with companies like SpaceX to expand commercial space access. Its flights cater to wealthy clients and researchers, with tickets costing hundreds of thousands.

Private spaceflight has grown rapidly, fueled by billionaire-backed firms challenging NASA’s traditional dominance. Suborbital trips like Blue Origin’s are shorter and less costly than orbital missions.

Some celebrate the all-female crew as a step toward inclusivity in a historically male-dominated field. Others question the value of brief, pricey trips for the ultra-wealthy over scientific missions.
