Suspect in Charlie Kirk Killing Allegedly Confesses in Online Chat

Tyler Robinson, the 22-year-old suspect accused of fatally shooting conservative activist Charlie Kirk, reportedly admitted his involvement in a private Discord group chat with close friends just hours before his arrest. The message, sent on Thursday evening, came amid a tense manhunt that gripped Utah and the nation after Kirk’s death at a university event.
Kirk, a prominent figure in conservative circles and founder of Turning Point USA, was speaking to a crowd of about 3,000 at Utah Valley University in Orem when a single bullet struck him in the neck on Wednesday afternoon. The shooting sent students scrambling for safety and sparked widespread outrage over rising political violence in the United States.
Authorities quickly identified Robinson as the prime suspect based on surveillance footage showing a man matching his description arriving on campus hours before the incident. Robinson, a third-year student in an electrical apprenticeship program at Dixie Technical College in St. George, had no prior enrollment at UVU but lived about 250 miles south of the campus.
In the Discord chat, Robinson allegedly wrote to his friends, “Hey guys, I have bad news for you all. It was me at UVU yesterday. I’m sorry for all of this. I’m surrendering through a sheriff friend in a few moments. Thanks for all the good times and laughs.” The platform, popular among young gamers and online communities, suspended his account shortly after for violating its policies on off-platform behavior.
These friends appear to be a small circle of acquaintances, possibly sharing left-leaning views, though officials have not released their identities or confirmed any prior knowledge of the plot. Reports indicate that the same group chat may have included earlier messages where members joked about Robinson’s resemblance to the suspect’s photos released by the FBI, with one user writing, “Tyler killed Charlie!!!!” in apparent jest the day before his confession.
Robinson’s online activity provides key context to his radicalization, as family members told investigators he had grown more political in recent years, expressing strong dislike for Kirk’s views during a family dinner shortly before the event. A relative noted that Robinson described Kirk as “full of hate and spreading hate,” highlighting tensions over conservative campus activism.
The confession message was sent around 7:57 p.m. local time, roughly two hours before Robinson surrendered to authorities in southwestern Utah, facilitated by his father who recognized him from public images and urged him to turn himself in. Despite initial resistance, where he reportedly said he would rather end his life than face arrest, Robinson complied after family intervention.
Law enforcement, including the FBI, gathered evidence from Robinson’s roommates, who shared Discord messages referencing a rifle drop point and instructions to hide the weapon. Physical items, such as DNA on a towel wrapping the suspected murder weapon and a bullet casing inscribed with internet memes like “oh bella ciao,” further link him to the crime scene on a rooftop overlooking the event.
Utah Governor Spencer Cox, a Republican, has emphasized the need for unity amid the tragedy, calling the killing a stark reminder of how quickly online echo chambers can fuel extreme actions. Prosecutors plan to seek the death penalty, with formal charges set for next week, as the investigation probes whether Robinson acted alone or if broader influences played a role.
Kirk’s widow, Erika, vowed to carry on his legacy, thanking first responders and supporters in an emotional address. The incident has renewed debates on campus security and the dangers of targeted political attacks, with both parties condemning the violence while pointing to deeper societal divides.
As Robinson remains in custody without bail at Utah County Jail on charges of aggravated murder and related felonies, questions linger about the full scope of his online network. The public push for transparency underscores demands for complete disclosure of chat logs to ensure no accomplices escape scrutiny in this high-profile case.
