The Context
Croatia also expressed interest in the SAMP/T air defense system, co-developed by France and Italy. This move signals broader ambitions to strengthen national defense.
France has ramped up CAESAR production since Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine. Output rose from two units monthly to six, with capacity for eight.
French manufacturers are considering a second assembly line. If approved, production could double to 16 CAESARs per month.
The howitzers will enhance Croatia’s ability to respond to regional threats. NATO membership, which Croatia joined in 2009, drives its defense upgrades.
The deal strengthens ties between Croatia and France within the European defense framework. It also supports France’s growing role in global arms exports.
Some back the purchase, arguing it bolsters national security and NATO commitments. Others question the cost, preferring funds for domestic needs like healthcare.
