Russian Drone Attacks Persist In Kherson Targeting Civilians
Russian forces have intensified their drone attacks on civilians in Kherson with a recent strike hitting men repairing a roof. These assaults dubbed drone safari hunts by locals have terrorized the southern Ukrainian city for over a year. The latest incident underscores a brutal campaign aimed at driving residents out through fear and destruction.
The attack occurred in a residential area where a group of carpenters was fixing storm damage on a home. Witnesses reported a small explosive-laden drone swooping down and detonating near the workers injuring several. Ukrainian officials say such precision strikes on noncombatants are a deliberate tactic to destabilize the region.
Kherson sits perilously close to Russian-held territory across the Dnipro River making it a prime target. Since Ukraine liberated the city in November 2022 Moscow has unleashed near-daily barrages on its population. Drone strikes have surged since mid-2024 with hundreds wounded or killed in what locals call a human hunting ground.
Russian soldiers have posted videos online boasting of their attacks on Kherson’s civilians. These clips often show drones chasing people in streets or dropping bombs on cars and homes. International observers condemn the footage as evidence of war crimes though Russia denies targeting noncombatants.
The men hit in the latest strike were part of a volunteer effort to repair homes battered by prior assaults. Two suffered severe shrapnel wounds and were rushed to a nearby hospital per local reports. Ukrainian medics say treating drone victims has become routine as attacks grow more frequent and brazen.
Kyiv has struggled to counter the low-flying drones which evade traditional air defenses with their small size. Electronic jammers offer some protection but cannot fully stop the onslaught. Residents now dread clear days when drones are most active leaving them trapped indoors or fleeing entirely.
Human rights groups have documented over 9000 drone strikes in Kherson since July 2024. The campaign has slashed the city’s pre-war population from 250000 to under 60000. Advocates demand global action to halt what they call systematic terror against a defenseless populace.
Tonight’s attack renews calls for stronger sanctions and aid to shield Kherson from Russia’s aerial terror. Ukrainian leaders plead for advanced defenses to reclaim their skies and protect citizens. The war-weary city braces for more violence as Moscow shows no sign of relenting in its cruel pursuit.
