Trump’s Congress Speech Wins Strong Viewer Approval

President Donald Trump’s address to a joint session of Congress has sparked a wave of reactions, with a fresh poll showing most viewers gave it a thumbs-up. The primetime speech, delivered Tuesday night, laid out Trump’s vision for his second term, focusing on economic plans, border security, and a shake-up of federal government operations. A CBS News/YouGov survey found that 76% of those who tuned in approved of what they heard, while just 23% disapproved—a resounding endorsement from a heavily Republican-leaning audience.
The speech marked Trump’s first time addressing both chambers of Congress since reclaiming the White House six weeks ago. Speaking for over 90 minutes, he touted early wins like tariff threats against trading partners and a deportation push at the southern border. He also doubled down on promises to slash government spending, leaning on his new Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), led by Elon Musk. The CBS poll, conducted right after the address, captured reactions from 1,207 viewers, a sample weighted to reflect those who planned to watch.
Approval wasn’t universal, but the numbers tell a clear story. Republicans, who made up much of the viewership, cheered Trump’s focus on campaign pledges like immigration crackdowns and trade reciprocity. Many described him as “presidential” and “inspiring,” with a majority calling the speech “entertaining” too. About two-thirds of viewers felt he offered a solid plan to tackle rising prices—a top voter concern—though some critics argue he’s yet to deliver concrete steps on that front.
Democrats who watched painted a different picture. Most reported feeling “worried,” and 4 in 10 said the speech left them “angry.” Some lawmakers from the left skipped the event entirely, protesting Trump’s policies on government cuts and immigration. Others, like Rep. Al Green of Texas, made headlines when he was ejected for interrupting the president, a move that drew applause from Trump’s base and ire from his opponents. Democratic women in Congress wore pink in defiance, signaling their pushback against what they call harmful policies.
Trump’s performance comes as his overall approval ratings hover around 48%, according to recent national polls, a step up from his first term’s rocky start. His speech leaned hard into red-meat issues—think tariffs and border troops—that fire up his supporters, even as he faces headwinds on inflation and trade tensions. The CBS survey suggests he’s keeping his core coalition energized, with 70% of respondents saying he’s delivering on 2024 campaign promises. Still, the partisan divide is stark, and his broader appeal remains a question mark.
For now, Trump’s allies see the speech as a win, reinforcing his mandate after a narrow election victory. Critics, though, warn that governing will take more than rallying the faithful. With DOGE cuts looming and tariff deadlines nearing, the next few months will test whether this wave of approval holds—or if it’s just a fleeting high from a friendly crowd. Either way, Trump’s made it clear he’s not slowing down.
