The Context
The UK Foreign Office had believed the couple were transferred to Tehran around June 8. That raised fears they were caught in the June 23 b-mb attack on Evin prison.
On Tuesday, it was confirmed they remain in Kervan and were not affected by the b-mbing. Their son had spent weeks uncertain of their location or condition.
Iran has frequently arrested foreign nationals on espionage charges, often without clear evidence or transparent legal processes. Such detentions have sparked diplomatic tensions over the years.
Evin prison is infamous for housing political prisoners and detainees held without trial. The June attack reportedly killed more than 70, amplifying international concern.
Human rights groups have long criticized Iran’s treatment of detainees and the use of vague charges. Families of prisoners often face prolonged uncertainty and limited communication.
Some argue that foreign travel through conflict-prone regions carries inherent risks. Others maintain that holding travelers without due process violates international norms.
