Trump Threatens 50% China Tariff Hike If Retaliation Persists
President Trump has warned he will slap an additional 50% tariff on Chinese goods starting Wednesday unless Beijing reverses its recent retaliatory trade measures, escalating an already tense economic standoff. The ultimatum follows China’s imposition of 34% tariffs on all U.S. imports last week, a direct response to Trump’s earlier 54% levies on Chinese products.
Trump announced the threat via Truth Social on Sunday. He called China’s actions “weak” and vowed to protect American workers.
The U.S. tariffs, effective since April 9, already raised duties on China to 54%. Beijing’s countermeasure hit $330 billion in U.S. exports, per trade data.
China’s commerce ministry labeled Trump’s policies “bullying” on Monday. They urged dialogue, but Trump shows no sign of backing down.
The new 50% hike would push total U.S. tariffs on China near 70%. Economists warn it could crater global supply chains and spike consumer prices.
Trump’s team says it’s a necessary stand against unfair trade. They point to China’s subsidies and intellectual property theft as justification.
Markets plunged last week as the trade war intensified. The Dow fell nearly 4%, its worst drop since 2020, on Friday alone.
China has also curbed rare earth exports, a critical tech resource. This move threatens U.S. manufacturers reliant on those materials.
Trump insists America holds the upper hand economically. He claims China’s market losses far outweigh U.S. setbacks.
Lawmakers are split, with some cheering the hard stance. Others fear it risks jobs and growth if retaliation spirals further.
Negotiations remain stalled, with no talks scheduled. Both sides appear dug in, raising recession fears worldwide.
The deadline looms just days away, testing Trump’s resolve. Analysts say he’s unlikely to blink first in this high-stakes gamble.
