San Diego Border Officers Face Charges for Bribery, Illegal Immigrant Smuggling
Two U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers in San Diego have been charged with accepting bribes to allow vehicles packed with illegal immigrants to cross the border undetected, exposing deep corruption at a key entry point. Federal prosecutors unveiled the indictments this week, spotlighting a scheme that undermines national security amid a surge in illegal crossings.
Farlis Almonte and Ricardo Rodriguez allegedly pocketed thousands in cash from smugglers. Court filings reveal nearly $70,000 was seized from Almonte alone.
Surveillance footage captured the officers waving through suspect vehicles. Often, only one occupant was logged despite multiple illegal immigrants hidden inside.
The operation relied on coordination with Mexican trafficking networks. Smugglers reportedly paid up to $5,000 per vehicle to bypass inspections.
Prosecutors say the scheme ran for at least a year before detection. Both officers face up to 20 years in prison if convicted on bribery charges.
Almonte’s arrest last month uncovered suspicious bank deposits. Rodriguez was detained shortly after, following a sting operation.
The case has sparked outrage among border security advocates. They argue it shows systemic flaws in vetting and oversight at CBP.
More charges, including money laundering, could be added as the investigation widens. Authorities suspect others may be involved.
San Diego processes over 100,000 vehicle crossings monthly. This breach threatens efforts to curb illegal immigration and drug trafficking.
CBP has suspended both officers without pay pending trial. The agency vows to root out corruption within its ranks.
Lawmakers are calling for tougher penalties and reforms. They warn such incidents erode public trust in border enforcement.
The scandal comes as President Trump pushes for stricter border controls. He cited it as proof of the need for his policies on Monday.
