Supreme Court Reverses Patrick Daley Thompson Fraud Ruling

The Supreme Court has overturned the bank fraud conviction of former Chicago Alderman Patrick Daley Thompson. In a unanimous decision the justices ruled the law used against him does not cover misleading statements that are not outright false. This marks a stunning turn for the Daley family political heir.

Thompson was convicted in 2022 for lying to regulators about loans from a failed Chicago bank. He served four months in prison after a jury found him guilty on seven counts including tax fraud. The case stemmed from 219000 dollars he borrowed from Washington Federal Bank for Savings.

The high court decision hinges on a narrow reading of federal law governing false statements. Thompson admitted his words to the FDIC were misleading but argued they were not lies. Chief Justice John Roberts wrote that only clear falsehoods fall under the statute not half-truths.

Federal prosecutors had accused Thompson of hiding extra loans totaling 109000 dollars beyond an initial 110000 dollar sum. He claimed deductions for interest never paid on his tax returns from 2013 to 2017. The bank collapsed in 2017 amid a massive fraud scandal unrelated to Thompson.

The ruling sends the case back to the 7th Circuit Court of Appeals for review. Lower courts must now decide if Thompsons statements were outright false not just deceptive. Experts say this could still uphold parts of his conviction especially the tax charges which he did not appeal.

Thompson hails from Chicagos famed Daley dynasty as grandson of Mayor Richard J. Daley and nephew of Mayor Richard M. Daley. His 2022 sentencing was the first federal conviction of a Daley in office. The reversal offers him a chance to clear his name though legal battles persist.

Defense attorney Chris Gair hailed the decision as a victory for justice after years of fighting. Prosecutors have not yet signaled their next move but could argue Thompsons words were false in context. The split among appeals courts on this law prompted the Supreme Courts intervention.

This ruling fits a pattern of the court narrowing federal corruption laws in recent years. It leaves Thompson’s ultimate fate uncertain pending further review. For now the ex-alderman has won a major reprieve in a case that shook Chicago politics.
